Once a year, EDEN delegates assemble at the EDEN Annual Meeting to share best practices, developing research, showcase projects that have been completed throughout the year, and enhance skill sets through professional development opportunities. The four-day Annual Meeting rotates by region and is hosted in a location that offers delegates the ability to learn about diverse emergency preparedness issues facing the local community.

Program Update
National Extension Dining with Diabetes

The National Extension Dining with Diabetes (NDWD) Working Group leadership recognized the importance of being innovative to find new ways to reach people with diabetes who were isolated due to the pandemic. A Dining with Diabetes (DWD) Email Challenge committee of five educators from Kansas State Extension, Mississippi State University Extension, Purdue Extension, and University of Idaho Extension created a 4-week DWD Email Challenge that was first piloted in May of 2020 and was offered nationally in November 2020. In November 2021 the DWD Email Challenge was offered nationally by Julie Buck and Laura Sant, University of Idaho Extension educators. The objectives were to help individuals learn strategies to manage their diabetes through menu planning, carbohydrate counting, portion control, and label reading. Each week participants received two emails, the first educational and the second a reflection on progress.
The May 2020 national DWD Email Challenge pilot had 228 participants. Of these participants, 63 (27.6%) filled out the initial baseline survey via Qualtrics where they set a SMART goal for themselves and estimated their personal confidence level about making progress towards accomplishment (scale of 1-10; 1 = not confident at all; 10 = extremely confident). Of the 17 participants who completed the final evaluation, 11 (64.7%) indicated they felt positively about the progress made towards their SMART goal. Thirteen (76.5%) indicated they learned new information.
The November 2020 national program had 380 participants. Of these participants, 48 (12.6%) filled out the initial Qualtrics survey. An average of 17 (4.47%) individuals completed the weekly Qualtrics surveys tracking progress towards accomplishing their SMART goal (range of 8-30 individuals). The final survey was completed by 32 (8.42 %) individuals. Of the 32 participants who completed the final evaluation, 26 (81.25%) indicated they felt positively about the progress made towards their SMART goal. Additionally, 26 (81.25%) indicated they learned new information.
The November 2021 University of Idaho Extension program had 13 participants. Of these participants, 8 (61.5%) filled out the initial Qualtrics survey. An average of four (30.8%) completed the weekly surveys tracking progress towards their goals (range 2-7 individuals). Four (30.8%) participants completed the final survey. Of those who completed the final evaluation, three (75%) indicated they felt positively about their SMART goal. Additionally, three (75%) indicated they learned new information, and four (100%) responded that they would recommend this Email Challenge to a friend, family member, or co-worker.

Online learning opportunities can help Extension professionals learn about disaster resources and programs used by their colleagues, keep up-to-date on federal disaster programs, and assemble a toolbox for building disaster resilient communities. EDEN webinars must address a disaster-related topic in one of Extension’s main program areas: Agriculture, Nature Resources, Community Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Sea Grant. The EDEN Professional Development Committee accepts webinar proposals on a continuous basis. If you have a webinar proposal you would like to submit for review, follow the link above for the submission form.
Webinars should be developed by EDEN, by one of its state-based member Extension programs, or by one of its partners. All slidesets must be submitted to the EDEN Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Cheyanne Geideman (cgeidema@nullpurdue.edu), and the EDEN Project Coordinator, Abby Lillpop (alillpop@nullpurdue.edu), at least 24 hours prior to the webinar.
